A well-built privacy fence adds security, privacy, and value to a home — and in Texas it also has to stand up to strong wind, heat, and storms. Here is what to expect when you install a new wood fence in the Dallas–Fort Worth area.
Cedar or pine?
Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects, stays straighter over time, and weathers to an attractive silver-gray if left unstained. It typically costs more than pine.
Pine (usually pressure-treated) is a budget-friendly option that can perform well, especially when it is sealed or stained.
Many fences combine materials — for example, cedar pickets with treated pine or steel posts for added strength.
Popular privacy fence styles
- Side-by-side: pickets placed edge to edge for a clean, classic look
- Board-on-board: overlapping pickets that maintain privacy even as the wood shrinks
- Cap and trim: a top cap and trim board that give the fence a finished, upscale appearance
Gates deserve special attention. A gate that is framed and braced correctly will swing smoothly and latch securely for years.
Check HOA and property requirements first
If you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, check its rules for fence height, style, stain color, and which side of the fence faces out. Getting approval before work begins avoids costly changes later. It is also a good idea to confirm your property lines and have underground utilities marked before any digging.

- Setting posts at the correct depth and spacing so the fence stays straight and resists wind
- Installing rails and pickets level and plumb along the line
- Building gates and installing hardware
- Cleanup of the work area

Keep your fence looking good
Stain or seal wood fencing after it has had time to dry out, and plan to re-stain periodically. Check for leaning posts or loose pickets after storms so small repairs do not turn into big ones.
