Sod Installation in Fort Worth: Choosing the Right Grass

How to pick between Bermuda, St. Augustine, and Zoysia for a DFW yard, how to prepare the ground, and how to water new sod so it roots.

A new lawn is one of the fastest ways to transform a property, but in North Texas the results depend on choosing the right grass and preparing the ground properly. Here is what homeowners and property managers in Fort Worth and across DFW should know before installing sod.

Choose a grass that fits your yard

Bermuda is the most common choice for sunny yards. It handles heat and foot traffic well and recovers quickly, which makes it popular for families, pets, and commercial landscapes. It needs plenty of direct sun.

St. Augustine has wide blades and tolerates more shade than Bermuda, so it is often used in yards with mature trees. It generally needs more water than Bermuda during the summer.

Zoysia forms a dense, carpet-like lawn and handles moderate shade. It establishes more slowly but rewards patience with a thick, attractive turf.

If part of your yard is shaded and part is in full sun, it is worth talking through the options — the right answer is sometimes different for the front and back yard.

Preparation matters more than the sod itself

Most sod problems trace back to the ground underneath it. A proper installation includes:

  • Removing old turf and weeds so the new sod is not competing for water and nutrients
  • Grading for drainage so water flows away from the foundation instead of pooling
  • Loosening and leveling the soil so roots can grow into it
  • Laying sod tightly with staggered seams and no gaps or overlaps

North Texas clay soil holds water and can crack when dry, which makes grading and soil preparation especially important.

When to install

Warm-season grasses establish fastest from late spring through summer, when they are actively growing. Sod can be installed much of the year in DFW, but installations outside the growing season need extra attention to watering and may take longer to root.

Watering new sod

  • First two weeks: keep the sod and the soil beneath it consistently moist. Short, frequent watering is usually best, especially in summer heat.
  • Weeks three and four: water less often but more deeply to encourage deeper roots.
  • After that: switch to a normal deep-watering schedule and follow local watering guidelines.

Try to stay off new sod until it has rooted — a gentle tug on a corner should meet resistance.
