If you have lived in Dallas–Fort Worth for long, you have seen cracked driveways, sunken walkways, and uneven patios. The main reason is the ground itself — and the good news is that the right preparation makes a big difference.
The problem: expansive clay soil
Much of North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells when it gets wet and shrinks as it dries out. That constant movement pushes and pulls on anything built on top of it. Long dry spells followed by heavy rain make the effect worse.
How a quality concrete installation fights back
1. Base preparation. The soil is excavated to the right depth, compacted, and topped with a properly compacted base. Skipping this step is the most common cause of early failure.
2. Reinforcement. Steel rebar or wire mesh, set at the correct height within the slab, helps hold concrete together if it does crack.
3. Control joints. All concrete cracks to some degree. Control joints, cut or tooled at planned intervals, give it a place to crack neatly in a straight line instead of randomly across the surface.
4. Proper thickness and slope. Driveways need enough thickness for vehicle loads, and every surface should slope slightly so water drains away from the home instead of soaking the soil underneath.
5. Curing. Concrete gains strength over weeks, not hours. Keeping it from drying out too fast in Texas heat helps it reach its full strength.
Caring for your concrete
- Keep gutters and downspouts directing water away from driveways and slabs
- Seal the surface periodically to reduce water penetration
- Fill small cracks early before water widens them
- Avoid parking heavy equipment near the edges of residential driveways
Repair or replace?
Small cracks can often be repaired. When sections have sunk, heaved, or created trip hazards, replacing those sections — with the base corrected — is usually the longer-lasting fix.
